Success stories (part 1)

I'm a sucker for a good story.

Yup, so I'm a sucker for a good story. I like to hear someone finding success after following their dreams. I love a great underdog story. Who doesn't? Someone comes from against all odd and defies everything logical. Many don't give them hope.  I read those stories and it really inspire me to the bone. I truly believe reading those stories gives you that push when you need it.

So I love sports and the underdog stories that come out of it. When I say I love sports... I really mean it. ESPN is my best friend. Ha! And I have my own account on Bleacher Report. I can talk about stats for hours. So yup, I'm a sports nuts. Maybe I'm in the minority in this, but I'm proud to be a female that loves sports. Yet, I love makeup, shopping, and all the girly stuff. I've tend to keep my sports love on the "down low", because my girlfriends don't talk about it.

Ladies, I know some of you don't give a damn about sports. I know. But this is for your general knowledge...

One of the best underdog stories in NBA history: Linsanity
Last year, I went to NYC just for him - okay, maybe to do some shopping too - but still, I went to Madison Square Garden just to see a Knicks game!! I'm a big fan of Jeremy Lin.

Before Feb 4 2012, nobody knew him. He was the last player on the Knicks bench, a third string point guard on the verge of being cut for the season. Ha! Let's not forget that he was sleeping on his teammates' couches! On February 4th, with the team still struggling, the coach gave him a chance to play. Why not? They couldn't be doing worse!! So Linsanity was born.

Jeremy who? Lin. Jeremy Lin. One of the very few players of Asian decent to play in the NBA. He went to Harvard. He was not offered a scholarship out of high school. Obama is a big fan of him. Well, he became THE best player on the team. He provides fans with branding elements that are easy to use and remember. Lintastic, Lincredible, Linteresting, Super Lintendo, and Linsanity. These phrases entertain, amuse, and help him to stand out from the crowd. The NBA has not seen this kind of branded language since Shaquille O'Neal (Shaq-attack!) He went from a nobody to having the home fans chanting M-V-P. Oh, and after the season (just few months after the Lin-craze), he signed a contract of $25 million for 3 years with the Houston Rockets. Not bad for a guy who used to sleep on his teammates' couches.

Another greatest underdog stories in sport: Tim Tebow

Tebowmania. Though he succeeded and won championship in high school, and college, many experts doubted he could succeed in the NFL. Critics said he was a quarterback with a weird throwing motion and wasn't a typical NFL quarterback. The Broncos began the season 1-4, so they basically said "oh what the hell, let's see what we have in Tebow". Well, he took them to the playoffs. He was THE story in the NFL. He has become famous not just for his athletic skills, but also for the specific prayer ritual he conducts during football games.

Linsanity and Tebowmania share many similarities. Both are religious, underdogs and popular. Tebow carried Denver, Christianity, and the NFL's fan bases on his back. Lin touched the Knicks, Christianity, Asians, and NBA.

Today's lesson:
- Believe in yourself when no one else does.
- Seize the opportunity when it comes up.
- Work your butt off!
